Opening Doors to Education Worldwide

Dirk's Picture Blog of Day 6: Rotary2008 Convention

Finally, the pace of the convention started slowing down today. The traffic by our booth in the House of Friendship was sparse but still several new friends stopped by with learning opportunities for kids they are currently working. In total we collected contact information for 200 volunteers already working on learning for kids projects in their home country. I spent some time with Roger Hayward (Alliston, ON CANADA), North American Coordinator for Rotary Literacy Resource Group. Roger was in booth 1300 across the aisle from us and share that he will be leading up a worldwide literacy newsletter for rotary next year – he’s looking for great stories with great pictures.

I have now sent all 200 contacts a small email encouraging them to read this daily picture blog of my first RI convention. We have nearly 50 members of this website as the convention closes. Many have shared with me that they will not check email until they return home so we hope all 200 will connect virtually here – there is much we can learn from each other.

Our booth held our drawing for a digital camera at Noon today. Our close, trusted friend from Kosova Rotary drew the name. I’m pleased to announce that George Barenzi from Entebbe, Uganda was our winner and hopes he puts the camera to good use capturing fellowship and peace in his travels and shares the pictures with all of us.

Tomorrow will be the last day of this daily picture blog initiative – my objective is to think of a stretch assignment to propose to the Rotary Literacy Resource Group.
